Meet our Community Shop volunteers - Gabby and Stephen
Today, as part of volunteer week, we're talking to the volunteers at our Big Help Community Shops! We have 6 shops all across Merseyside, and these are almost entirely run by volunteers. These volunteers get to know their communities, and sort through dozens of donations every day. We really wouldn't be able to support all of our charitable projects without their support.
Stephen started in our Prescot shop almost two years ago, originally only working 3 hours a week on Thursdays. Now he's in the shops for three days every week.
Gabby, from our Dovecot shop, only started 4 months ago, but she's already going above and beyond. She's been sending any clothes that we don't sell to Lithuania, where they go to refugee camps for the Ukrainian people.
Why did you decide to Volunteer for the Big Help Project?
STEPHEN: Two reasons, one because I had lots of spare time; two because I enjoy working for a good cause. Big Help project is an extremely good charity that helps out people in need, including helping people with housing. Plus I get a few good bargains out of it too!
GABBY: I decided to volunteer because I've always liked to help people, and since my children are now at school age I've got much more free time.
How long have you worked here?
STEPHEN: Nearly two years.
GABBY: Four months now!
What is your best memory volunteering for the Big Help Project Prescot Shop?
STEPHEN: Chatting with the other girls volunteering and eating biscuits, socialising and getting out of the house.
GABBY: I really appreciate all the time I spend volunteering. Every memory is one to cherish.
How has volunteering impacted you?
STEPHEN: Volunteering has helped get me out the house, and socialising with staff and volunteers has helped me with my mental health and happiness.
GABBY: It's given me the opportunity to do good for the community, and also allows me to work flexible hours around my children's lives.
